Credit Crunch Lecture so Popular it needs a Podcast!

6/12/2007

Britain’s ‘Credit Crunch’ is such a hot topic that one university turned to an internet podcast for help.

Aston Business School invited MBA alumnus Alan Gilmour, now the Marketing Director of Heritable Bank in London, to lead a discussion on the subject.

But organisers were overwhelmed by the response from current and former students, so they arranged for those who could not attend to watch it on their computer screens.

The lecture, called ‘Credit Crunch - views from the sharp end’, took place at Aston Business School yesterday. (Monday, November 26)

Dr Gareth Griffiths, Head of International Relations and MBA Director (External) at Aston Business School, said he was delighted with how popular Alan Gilmour’s lecture was.

“Britain’s ‘Credit Crunch’ is certainly a hot subject at the moment and Alan’s many years of experience allowed him to talk about this topic with a great deal of authority,” he said.

“By using a podcast we were able to share the debate with those who could not attend on the night.”

The ‘credit crunch’ was set off by the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the US three months ago, which caused turmoil in the markets and impacted Europe and the rest of the world.

Some have compared it to several episodes from history, including the Great Depression of the 1930s and more recent experiences in Japan and Korea.

The growth of credit has created an illusory prosperity while producing profound imbalances in the economy.

Dr Griffiths added: “Banks won't or can't lend, while investors can't or won't buy debts.

“It's much harder to borrow money and there could be serious ramifications for the economy.”
