Gender Influence at Aston Business School

9/8/2007

Aston Business School's MBA course has reported a much higher attendance of women on its MBA course, but there isn't a clear explanation of why!

"The normal gender split for an MBA is 75/25 with a male dominance," explained MBA Director Dr Gareth Griffiths "But in last year's intake we had a very unusual 50/50 split. It is not something we have consciously strived to achieve, but maybe subconsciously we are projecting ourselves in a way that is appealing to women."

Dr Griffiths explains that this split can give the course a very different path with equal gender influences on group work, add to this the complexity of 18 nationalities represented on the MBA and it is quite a diverse mix.

The university has conducted research on diversity within groups and it is proven that although the pathway is not smooth, with many conflicting views coming to play early on, the results are usually greater than a non-diverse group of students.

"Diverse groups will obviously reflect different experiences, both culturally and within the workplace, these different perspectives can challenge the individuals within the group to consider points of view outside of their comfort zone. This then creates a higher level of creativity as different characters work in unknown territory to achieve a group result."

Aston Business School is highly regarded nationally and internationally and is committed to giving all students a totally inspirational learning experience whilst being situated in the UK's second city with its cosmopolitan, multi-cultural centre. Its MBA course offers state-of-the-art equipment and lecturing facilities alongside excellent student accommodation.
